Thamesians RFC twinned with club in Zambia

Thamesians RFC ladies team are a locally based club who play and train at St Mary’s University.

Last August the ladies’ team were due to play in an international sevens tournament in Zambia.

This was to provide a rare opportunity for their Zambian hosts to play against a team from beyond sub-Saharan Africa, and at the same time the Thamesians players were scheduled to undertake outreach in local hospitals and schools.

Covid19 intervened and the tournament was postponed. 2021 will come too early but the target now is for the tournament to take place in 2022.

The original tour sponsors have left their funds in place and I am sure the tournament will be even greater value after all the world has been through.

In the meantime, Thamesians Ladies are now proud to be twinned with the ladies’ team of Mufulira Rugby Club (The Leopardesses).

Alongside training the Leopardesses have been making face masks and supplying these to the local community and to other African rugby clubs.

It’s not too late to get training and seek selection for the tour to Zambia!

The tragedy of the War Memorial Pavilion has been revealed by arial photos taken by residents. These reveal that under the ownership of Mr Wu the building has fallen into such disrepair as to render future renovation work hugely expensive. The project had been to bring the changing rooms back into early use for the community clubs playing on these fields. There were relatively new boilers and heating systems installed just before Imperial College sold the site. The building interior had been dry – even if the changing rooms needed to be brought up to modern standards.
